Project-based participatory Gender analysis of the project “Promoting African Grassroots Economic Security (PAGES)”

JMK Consulting Ltd: We were engaged by Plan Ghana to carry out a project-based participatory gender analysis on the PAGES project. Employing one-on-one key informant interview, focus group discussion and key with teachers, children and youth, men and women elders and school management committees and educational authorities etc, the team probed deeper into the gender issues in the project communities. The team also developed a corresponding gender strategy that sought to address the identified challenges. The final report was submitted in September 2011.

Research into the feasible Public-Private Partnership model for the establishment of a Commodity Exchange in Ghana

We were engaged by the Ghana Chamber of Commerce and Industry as part of its BUSAC Funded project to carry out a study into the most feasible public –private partnership model for commodity exchange mechanism in Ghana. As part of the research, we carried out a study tour to Ethiopia to study the Ethiopian Model and reviewed similar models after which we submitted our final report in October 2011. JMK Consulting is now the business service provider providing technical input to the chamber in its business advocacy endeavors.

Baseline Study of the Project “Banking on Change”

We were tasked by Plan Ghana to carry out baseline study on the project Banking on Change project. Barclays, CARE International, and Plan joined to improve the quality of life for poor people by extending and developing their access to basic financial services. This initiative brought together the resources, skills and experience of each organization and sought to reach around targets 63,000 rural households in six regions namely Upper West, Upper East, Northern, Volta, Greater Accra and Central. We carried out this study to the utmost satisfaction of our client on time and within budget. The final reports were submitted in June 2012.

Baseline study of the Inclucity project

We were engaged by CHF International to conduct baseline study on the project Inclucity: improving governance and services for Ghana’s urban poor program. The study sought to provide adequate information in relation to the current profile of the two metropolitan areas; revenue generation system; performance particularly on the FOAT indicators, mechanisms for citizen participation in inclusive planning and budgeting and rate of local government and citizens’ engagement in local government decision making. Employing the mixed method, similar urban-slum setting, and the study was successfuilly conducted in AMA and ATMA and completed in March 2012.

Needs assessment of community schools and school management committees (SMCS) in 40 target cocoa growing communities in Ghana

 We were engaged by the International Labour Organization, to carry out needs assessment of schools, including teachers and School Management Committee (SMC) in 40 cocoa growing communities in 3 regions for a demand driven approach in the project design, implementation and monitoring and evaluation. The research formed parts of a larger project “Towards Child Labour Free Cocoa Growing Communities in Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana through an Integrated Area-Based Approach (IAB)”, an initiative of the International Labour Organization International Program on the Elimination of Child Labour (ILO/IPEC) and the Ghana Ministry of Employment and Social Welfare. We produced our report on time which fed into the design and provision of direct educational services to target schools and teachers, (including training for teachers). The Final report was submitted in May 2012

Impact Assessment of the Banking on Change Project

We were engaged by Care International Ghana to carry out impact assessment of the Banking on Change project. This project which target about 63000 households in six regions of Ghana sought to deliver savings-led community finance by employing the Village Savings and Loan (VSL) methodology as the financial system of choice. VSLA is based on small groups of 15 to 25 members who mobilize savings, use their capital for loans to members who wish to borrow and usually operate a small insurance fund to address emergencies. The project was completed in November 2012.

National Case Study on the adoption of UNESCO Minimum Funding Norms and Standards

This study is part of the Right to Know, Right to education project of Idasa and GNECC that link capacity building, training, advocacy and policy dialogue into a fully integrated strategy to make interventions in quality basic education, access to information and parental involvement in school governance etc. in Ghana. JMK Consulting team is responsible to carrying out national, and school level assessment to establish the prevalence of funding norms and standards in education planning in Ghana and to scan the policy environment and lay foundation for an advocacy framework in support of the adoption of UNESCO minimum funding norms and standards.

Development of Gender Policy with Action Plan for Ghana Federation of the Disabled

JMK Consulting was engaged by the Steering Committee of the DANIDA project, representing the project partners to undertake a gender audit and develop gender mainstreaming strategy for organizations of persons with disabilities. The report examined the governance structure, membership, programmes, activities, and gender composition of these organizations. The report further examined the level of awareness and attitude of OPWDs towards gender issues, existence of gender policies and the availability of gender specific programmes and monitoring and evaluation mechanism within the disability movement with respect to gender issues. The report also looked at the challenges to gender mainstreaming and the level of networking and collaboration between the women’s wings of the various OPWDs and other gender based NGOs in Ghana and abroad. The project was submitted in time and on budget. The final report was delivered in January 2009.

Self Assessment/evaluation: The Inception Phase of the DANIDA project “Strengthening the Disability Movement in Ghana through Advocacy and Organizational Capacity Development”

JMK Consulting was contracted by the Ghana Federation of the Disabled (GFD) to facilitate final stakeholder self-assessment/evaluation of the inception phase of the DANIDA funded project titled ‘Strengthening of the Disability Movement in Ghana through Advocacy and Organisational Capacity Development”. We facilitated joint assessment of the project strategy, quality of methods used in project implementation; key achievements and lessons learned and made recommendations for the future. The project was submitted in time and on budget. The final report was delivered in January, 2010.

A study into the challenges and prospects for the establishment of a National Civil Society Fund for Education in Ghana

The Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC) wanted to facilitate the establishment of a National Civil Society Education Fund (NCSEF) in Ghana to primarily support civil society activism in the area of education. JMK Consulting was contracted to carry out a study to provide key recommendations for educational stakeholders to determine how to proceed with the implementation of the concept. The study was also expected to feed into the broader examination and understanding of the critical success factors upon which the success of NCSEF in the country depends. Draft report was submitted in November 2010 and presently waiting for client review.

Development of Programme Memorandum for the Ghana Civil Society Education Fund

JMK Consulting was contracted by the Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC) to prepare the programme document for the establishment of civil society Education Fund in Ghana. The report carried out a political economy analysis of the Ghanaian Education sector with particular references to the challenges facing education management, governance, resource allocation and entry point for civil society engagement to address these challenges. The program thematic areas, logical framework, risk and mitigation measures etc were developed. The final report was submitted in September 2011.

Project evaluation: Accelerating Development through Sustainable Mining (AD-SUM project)

We were engaged by the Social Support Foundation (SSF) to carry out an end of project evaluation of the project “Accelerating Development through Sustainable Mining project”. The project was a joint initiative of the Social Support Foundation (SSF) and the KASA project (initiated by Care International (Lead agency), ICCO, and SNV) and funded by the Royal Netherlands Embassy. The review sought to provide partner organization with information relating to project outcome and impact, document significant changes, marginal gains and lessons learned including Socially Responsible Investments (SRI) of multi-national enterprises and the use of revenue from gold mining within and around Obuasi in the Ashanti region. The final report was submitted in October 2010.

Project evaluation: Empowering Women with Disabilities in Ghana

We were engaged by Ghana Federation of the Disabled to carry out an end of project evaluation of the project “Empowering Women with disabilities in Ghana” a joint initiative of GFD and their Disabled People Organization of Denmark with funding from DANIDA. The purpose of this evaluation was to help stakeholders document key results achieved, outcome (if any) and lessons learned. The review exercise assessed the output and analyse the extent to which their outcomes fulfilled planned targets. The final report was submitted in September 2010.

Project designs for Inclusion Ghana using the Logframe Planning Approach

JMK Consulting was contracted by LEV, Denmark to assist their LFA Workshop in Ghana which sought to establish a consensus in Inclusion Ghana and its member organizations about a development programme with the LEV National Association to enable Inclusion Ghana build their capacity to handle its role as an advocacy organization. We facilitated the design of the project using the logical framework planning approach where the overall and immediate objectives, indicators, output and activities as well as target group analysis were undertaken in cooperation with conference participants. The final report was submitted in November, 2009 within time and on budget.

Development of Monitoring and Evaluation Framework for the Advocacy Strategy of the Disability Movement in Ghana

JMK Consulting was engaged by the Ghana Federation of the Disabled to coach the development of a monitoring and evaluation framework to track progress made in implementing their advocacy project and also assess how the overall and intermediate objectives of the advocacy project are being achieved over time. The final report was submitted in March 2009.

Market Survey into the Demand for Micro loans and Home improvement loans

JMK Consulting was contracted by HFC Bank and CHF International to undertake a baseline market survey to assess individuals; small and medium scale enterprises needs for financial services. The study did assess the demand for loans, saving and borrowing behaviour of business community and workers; the level of competition in the microfinance sector etc. The report thus provided an assessment of the market outlook and baseline information for the development and launching of Boafo Micro finance services in Ghana. The project was submitted in time and on budget. The final report was delivered in February 2007.

Contextual Analysis of the Disability Situation in Ghana

In 2008, JMK was engaged by the Steering Committee of the DANIDA project representing the project partners to conduct a study titled ‘Contextual Analysis of the Disability Situation in Ghana’. Employing one-on-one interview and focus group discursions, the report examined the social, economic, political, legal, technological, and cultural and media context as it relates to Persons with Disabilities. The report was to assist the disability movement to identify opportunities and barriers for influencing policies and developing strategies to move away from activity based planning to a more dynamic approach. JMK Consulting was also maintained as external Consultants on the project during the 18 month inception phase of the DANIDA project. Our advice and opinion were constantly sought on strategic issues regarding the implementation of the project in Ghana. Our report has been serving as a reference material on disability in Ghana and could be assessed from the client website at http://www.gfdgh.org/Context%20analysis.pdf. The final report was successfully submitted in January 2009.

Contextual analysis into voluntary fundraising market & viability of child sponsorship programme in the corporate sector in Ghana

Actionaid International (UK) wanted to change its present funding model where the North (namely Western Europe and North America) fund activities and programmes of the South (namely Africa, Middle East and Asia). JMK Consulting was tasked to conduct a context analysis into the voluntary fundraising market in Ghana. We analyzed existing competitors (INGOs and NGOs), their products, voluntary income, types and sources of funding, and voluntary income raised per annum etc. by source (e.g. individuals versus companies). We also examined the level of philanthropic interest among high net worth residents and non-residents in Ghana as well as the level of disposable income in Ghana. We further examined the Ghanaian socio-economic environment and highlighted the opportunities and challenges for voluntary fundraising. We finally evaluated the feasibility of a fundraising concept within the corporate sector in Ghana. The report was successfully completed and submitted in March 2009.
